WHMIS Products for the Workplace
Handling and Storage of Hazardous Materials in the Workplace
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, otherwise known as WHMIS, is a Canada-wide system designed to protect workers by giving critical information about hazardous materials used in the workplace.
Under WHMIS, workers have the right to receive information about each controlled product they use---its identity, hazards, and safety precautions. The goal of WHMIS is to reduce injury and disease by communicating specific health and safety information about controlled products, so that the information can be used to reduce exposure to hazardous materials.
The WHMIS legislation provides that workers must be informed about the hazards in the workplace and receive appropriate training to enable them to work safely. To accomplish this, WHMIS delivers the necessary information by means of:
All employees must have this training when they start working for a new employer.
The ultimate goal is to create a safer workplace by providing workers with the knowledge and tools to enable them to work safely.
Federal and Provincial Regulations (Canada Labour Code Part Two and Workers' Compensation Board Regulations) must be 100% in compliance whenever hazardous materials or controlled products are used in the workplace.
A
new Federal Law passed in March 2004, now makes Executive Officers, Company
Owners, Managers and even Shift Supervisors accountable for the actions of all
of their employees!
Bill C 45 amends the Criminal Code to clearly define who is responsible for the safety of persons in the workplace, and to allow for prosecution under charges of “Criminal Negligence” when those responsibilities are disregarded. This new requirement applies in addition to existing health and safety legislation, to both federally and provincially regulated workplaces. Charges under Bill C45 could result in penalties in the millions of dollars or a jail term, for those found guilty, of up to Life Imprisonment!
Using our services will be the key to ensure safety and compliance in the handling and storage of hazardous materials. Ensuring WHMIS education is provided will make your workplace safer and more productive.
Federal and Provincial Safety Standards require employee training, awareness and competence. Our WHMIS Hazardous Materials Handling training will assure your compliance to these standards.
Public Works and
Government Services Canada recently had a Canada wide R.F.P. for Dangerous Goods
Training. Their evaluation criteria was 75% for Instructor /
Technical content, and 25% for Price.
BCHAZMAT
Management Ltd. scored 100% for all Dangerous Goods Courses, both Civilian and
Military, for the Province of BC.
Training
is the key to a Defense of Due Diligence. The benefits of a good training
program are many, and the cost of a poor one is now the ultimate.
Make
training a high priority. Review existing policies and procedures,
training requirements and budgets. Take
time to evaluate the dedication of both managers and employees to a safe
workplace, and make improvements where they are needed.
